As he began his final illness, Cardinal Coleman received the Last Rites of the Catholic Church from our Holy Father Pope Pius XIII. Cardinal Coleman was a lay cardinal, one of seven appointed by Pius XIII in November 1998. The College of Cardinals has the duty to elect the pope on the death of the pope. In addition, Cardinal Coleman courageously accepted the wishes of Pius XIII for him to be named as one of two “public” cardinals. He was a man of great charity, and during the last year of his life, he made many sacrifices both personal and financial for the Church. May God reward him. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
